Contact the KSHA Office to register.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Abstract:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\nDuring this event, participants will learn about advocacy and the important role it plays in advancing and sustaining the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology. Participants will also receive updates on important legislative issues within our state. Finally, participants will apply what they learned, while using talking points and scripts, to effectively communicate with legislators about issues impacting our professions, such as school safety, state guidance in the use of telepractice, caseload reduction, services for individuals who are deaf and\/or hard-of-hearing, student debt and the Audiology Patient Choice Act.\n\n\n<h5><strong>Learner Outcomes:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\nThe participants will be able to:\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li>Name two elected officials who may support our organizational causes.<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Identify two legislative issues supported by KSHA.<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Provide three strategies for communicating with legislators during the advocacy event and in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Identify and discuss the results from the meetings with elected officials and staffers.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n<h5><strong>Time Ordered Agenda:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n<strong>8:00 am to 9:30 am \u2013 Check in and Prepare <\/strong>\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li>KSHA Executive Council member will provide an overview training on current KSHA advocacy efforts, basic governmental structure in Kentucky and how to talk with legislators<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Receive materials that will include\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li>Overview of the Day<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Handouts\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li>How to Talk with the Legislators: Guiding questions, sample script<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Information regarding current Issues<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Receive legislative visit appointments<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Information presented on Kentucky Therapy Tri-Alliance advocacy efforts<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>9:30 am to 11:30 am \u2013 Let\u2019s Meet the Elected Officials<\/strong>\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li>Participants will locate and speak with the Legislators and\/or Staffers<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Points of contact will be available for support and to answer questions throughout the time at designated locations.<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>11:30 am \u201312:00 pm \u2013 Debrief and Wrap-Up <\/strong>\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li>Share Impressions of the Event<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Successes and Lessons Learned<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Results of face-to-face communication with elected officials<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Implications for Participation in Future Advocacy Activities<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Impact on the Professions and Service Delivery<\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li>Next Steps<\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n&nbsp;\n\n\n<h5><strong>Presenters:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n<strong>Lacey Back MS, CCC-SLP<\/strong>, has worked as a speech-language pathologist since receiving her master\u2019s degree in 2008 from Marshall University. Ms. Lane currently works as a strategies consultant for the Kentucky Educational Development Corporation Special Education Cooperative, where she provides training and technical assistance to teacher and special education service providers for the development and implementation of programs to improve the performance of students. She has had experience working with children and adults in public schools, preschool programs and in skilled nursing facilities. Ms. Lane currently serves as President for the Kentucky Speech-Language Hearing Association.\n\n<strong>Kelly Kleinhans, PhD, CCC-SLP<\/strong>, is an associate professor, researcher, professional speaker, volunteer and speech-language pathologist who has a passion for serving others. She is committed to improving the quality of life for those with communication impairments as well as preparing her students for success with clinical experiences and life after graduation. After working in health care and education, Dr. Kleinhans joined the faculty at Murray State University. She is currently a clinical associate professor at \u00a0Austin Peay State University. In addition to numerous publications, presentations and grants, Dr. Kleinhans has overseen the development of an interdisciplinary voice and swallowing clinical research lab and the creation of an interdisciplinary brain injury graduate certificate. She has also chaired a regional interprofessional conference. Her administrative experience includes past Program Director of the Center for Communication Disorders and Assistant Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services.
