Beverly Stanley was present as a student at the initial organizational meeting that resulted in the formation of KSHA. Because of her love of the profession and of Kentucky specifically, she served on KSHA\u2019s Executive Council for over 30 years. When she was President of the Association, she coordinated the campaign for passage of the initial licensure law. She served as the chair of the Honors Committee for countless years and worked for several years to persuade the Executive Council to designate annual funds to support a student scholarship which was named for her in recognition of this effort. A tireless professional, she served two terms representing Kentucky on ASHA\u2019s Legislative Council and was appointed to two terms on the Kentucky Licensure Board. All of this was in a volunteer capacity. As for her \u201cday\u201d job, for 42 years, Communication Disorders majors at the University of Kentucky had one thing in common \u2013 they all learned audiology from one person \u2013 Beverly Stanley. In recognition of the impact she had on the education of generations of speech-language pathologists and audiologists, KSHA awarded her the Honors of the Association for distinguished educational activity in 1973 AND 2003. She received the Johanna B. Hancock Award in 1992, the highest honor of the Association.<\/p>\n
Dr. Karen Steckol \u2013 Cande (Candy) \u2013 loved Kentucky and her time at the University of Louisville as an Associate Professor. She was an expert in child language and taught evidence based practice long before it became a buzz-word! She had a passion for the profession of Speech-language Pathology and was a true leader for KSHA. Under her mentorship, the Association increased attendance at this annual convention to become one of the largest in the country. Steckol-Cande was the President of KSHA, received the KSHA DiCarlo Clinical Achievement Award in 1983 and Honors of the Association in 1985. She was an ASHA Fellow, consulting editor for the Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, author of many articles and frequently invited speaker. Although she left Kentucky to become a Dean at St. Louis University and Buffalo State College and then retired from the University of Alabama, her heart remained with us in Kentucky often returning to this convention. She was an excellent mentor, encouraging critical thinking and lifelong education.<\/p>\n
